The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands
We selected The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands for what the architecture alone tells you: Kerry...
Most Maldivian resorts promise a house reef; Ozen Reserve Bolifushi is one of the handful entirely encircled by one, a ring of coral close enough to the villas that snorkelling starts at the bottom of the pool-deck steps. The island sits in the South Male Atoll, a 30-minute luxury catamaran crossing from Velana International Airport after an escorted stop in a private departure lounge, the kind of transfer that already tells you what register the stay is pitched in. Ninety beachfront and overwater villas spread along the shoreline and out over the lagoon, several with private pools deep enough for a proper swim and, on select units, a slide that drops guests straight into the water below.
We kept this resort for three things a booking engine will not tell you: the reef that turns snorkelling into a five-minute errand rather than a boat excursion, an all-inclusive structure broad enough to cover a 101-label wine list and a dedicated butler, called a hiyani here, rather than just breakfast, and a kids' club large enough that parents actually get an evening to themselves. Four restaurants rotate Indian, Middle Eastern, pan-Asian and seafood menus without ever feeling like a single all-inclusive buffet wearing different uniforms.
South Male Atoll sits close enough to the capital for a short transfer yet far enough to feel properly removed, and the crossing itself, by catamaran rather than seaplane, is part of the slow-down. Being fully ringed by its own reef means the island's best feature does not require leaving it: snorkelling, a PADI dive centre and semi-submarine trips are a few steps from the villa deck, not a half-day logistics exercise. For a first Maldives trip built around ease rather than inter-atoll hopping, this is the more forgiving geography.

The villa range runs from Earth Pool Villas set back from the shoreline to overwater Ocean Pool Suites, and up to the three-bedroom Royal Reserve for groups travelling together. All ninety come with private pools, timber flooring and the kind of ceiling height that makes a tropical room feel larger than its square metres suggest; several overwater units add glass panels in the floor for watching reef fish pass beneath the bed. The slide units are worth requesting specifically if travelling with children old enough to use them unsupervised, since not every overwater villa has one.
Origin3 handles the formal end of the menu, Saffron turns out an honest Indian thali, Soyi works through Thai and pan-Asian dishes, and Sangu Beach keeps things barefoot and beachside for lunch, with Vista del Mar covering breakfast. Because the all-inclusive rate folds in the wine list rather than metering it by the glass, dinner here reads less like a resort package and more like an actual night out, which is one reason the 101-label cellar gets mentioned by nearly everyone who stays.
The 30-minute catamaran transfer from the airport is part of the experience rather than a chore, but it does mean no seaplane views on arrival, worth factoring in if the flight-in is part of what you are after. The all-inclusive plan covers food, drinks, non-motorised watersports and the kids' club, while the dive centre, motorised watersports and private yacht charters sit outside it. Families should ask about the Teen Lounge's Island Treasure Hunt before arrival if younger travellers will need structured activities beyond the main kids' club.
